YRES Youth Volunteer Success

The YRES Youth Volunteer Success (YYVS) program aims to empower youth between the ages of 12 to 30, from Indigenous, racialized, 2SLGBTQI+ , and those from rural or low-income backgrounds, to cocreate service placements and address pressing social issues across Toronto, York Region, and Ottawa. This project targets 1,070 flexible service placements in three cohorts and each opportunity will be 120 hours. Through these opportunities, youth will gain access to the knowledge, skills, tools, and support systems needed to successfully complete their placements. U+ Youth Volunteer Connects

The U+ Youth Volunteer Connect, aims to empower 335 youth between the ages of 12 to 30 and address pressing social issues across Toronto and York Region, Ontario. Each flexible service placement opportunity will be 120 hours for a total of 40,200 hours responding to the following service themes: Building an inclusive Canada and Strengthening youth resilience. Our target audience is 335 youth participants with 50% participation from Indigenous and underserved communities (including Black and racialized youth, Youth with disabilities, 2SLGBTQI+ youth, Newcomer youth, Youth from Official Language Minority Communities (OLMC), and Youth from low-income households) completing meaningful service placement opportunities.

What are Ontario's 40 volunteer hours?

Ontario students need 40 hours of community involvement activities to earn the OSSD. The province says students can start collecting hours in the summer before Grade 9.

Your school board sets the process for recording, submitting and approving hours, and your principal reviews planned and completed activities. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must sign your record of volunteer hours.

Can I start before Grade 9?

Yes. Ontario says you can start collecting community-involvement hours in the summer before you enter Grade 9.

Do all volunteer activities count toward the 40 hours?

No. Ontario lists eligible and ineligible activity boundaries, and your school board and principal apply the process. Confirm before relying on an activity for your hours.

Can online volunteering count?

Do not assume it automatically counts. Check the activity against your school board's rules and confirm it through your school's approval process.

Do my parents need to sign?

If you are under 18, Ontario requires a parent or guardian to sign your record of volunteer hours.
